Billy Boyd Cancels Toronto National Expo Gig
Parallel writes: I am a journalist working in the Toronto area. I had
arranged to have an interview with Billy Boyd before his upcoming appearance
here on the September 1st Labour Day weekend, but was told two days ago that
he's had to drop out of the show. Not sure if it's a personal or
professional commitment. Too bad, I was looking forward to speaking with
him.

about.

JACKSON LANDS LI/CHAN FILM?
Rumors about Peter Jackson directing Jakie Chan and Jet Li in a new movie
are absolutely untrue. Sources close to the Jackson camp confirmed this
earlier today. According to various websites Jackson has been signed to
direct an untitled new film, which would star Li as the villain, and Chan as
the hero. Chan recently spoke about the ambitious, high-action film, stating
it "will be more American-style. It will be more suited to foreign audiences
than Chinese audiences". Again, all of this is not true

3D LOTR Rises Again
Pauline writes: This is from an interview with James Cameron in the
September issue of Empire (UK): Added good news for film fans is that a
process called dimensionalisation enables classics to be re-released in 3-D,
starting with The Nightmare Before Christmas in December. "Peter Jackson is
a 3-D freak like me and he's been experimenting with footage from King Kong.
He and I also talked about the feasibility of doing the three LOTR films"
revealed Cameron.

Tolkien Scholar Segura to speak at Raynor Library
The Raynor Memorial Libraries' Department of Special Collections and
Archives will host a lecture by Tolkien scholar Eduardo Segura, Professor of
Aesthetics, Philosophy of Language, and Literature at the Institutio De
Filosofia Edith Sten (Granada, Spain) at 3:00 p.m. on September 26th in the
Raynor Library, 1355 W. Wisconsin Avenue, Milwaukee. Professor Segura's
presentation, "Tolkien, Lewis, and Hollywood: What Images Cannot Say," will
center on differences between literature and cinema as artistic means,
particularly from J.R.R. Tolkien's and C.S. Lewis’ outlook. Dr. Segura will
discuss Tolkien's passion for inventing languages, and the immense
difficulty of communicating metaphorical meaning on film—even those
brilliant scenes that Hollywood has recently released. A question and answer
session will follow.

The Tolkien Fan's Medieval Reader, edited by Turgon

Over the years Tolkien's fondness for and indebtedness to medieval
literature has often been mentioned. His special devotion to older Germanic
literature, including Beowulf and the Eddas, has long been known, for as a
professor he taught these works in addition to teaching the languages in
which they were written. This anthology has been compiled in the hope of
sharing the pleasures of these -- and other -- classics of medieval
literature that were part of Tolkien's professional life and inspirations to
him in his creative work.
