The core of the MBTA (the four central subway lines) covers all of Boston and most of the surrounding suburbs. Boston proper is less than 10 square miles of land. There is also bus service all over town, and extending into farther suburbs. All of that is covered with the passes.

It is extra if you want to ride the commuter rail, which goes to Rhode Island and New Hampshire and all over the place. The only thing I can see people using the commuter rail for is a ride to Salem, which takes about half an hour and costs three or four bucks.

A subway ride is $1.25. A bus ride is $0.90. Tokens for individual rides are available for purchase at every station.

A 3-day visitor is $18.00 It covers unlimited rides on the subway, bus, and water taxi. It is valid for any three days (you specify when purchasing it).

A 7-day visitor pass is just like the 3-day, but is $35.

A one week combo pass is $16.50. It is another unlimited ride pass, but it only covers Sunday-Saturday (August 1 - August 7). Thus, a one week pass -only- benefits you if you will be here on Wednesday or earlier.
