Even before the movies came out, there was so much activity on the Main board
that conversations about the books soon had to be abandoned. So here we
founded a new, quiet place for discussion of the words we loved. Of
course, even this was a temporary abode, and discussion will continue on the
new board. Still, I posted here on this forum’s first day. I'd like
to post something on its last before the conversation ceases here and resumes
in the new Reading Room, but I realize my words aren't good enough. Here
are some better ones:
"And then it seemed to him that as in his dream in the house of Bombadil, the
grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld
white shores and beyond them a far green country under a swift sunrise.
"But to Sam the evening deepened to darkness as he stood at the Haven; and as
he looked at the grey sea he saw only a shadow on the waters that was soon lost
in the West. There still he stood far into the night, hearing only the
sigh and murmur of the waves on the shores of Middle-earth, and the sound of
them sank deep into his heart. Beside him stood Merry and Pippin, and
they were silent."
"'Estel, Estel!' she cried, and with that even as he took her hand and kissed
it, he fell into sleep….
"But Arwen went forth from the House, and the light of her eyes was quenched,
and it seemed to her people that she had become cold and grey as nightfall in
winter that comes without a star. Then she said farewell to Eldarion, and
to her daughters, and to all whom she had loved; and she went out from the city
of Minas Tirith and passed away to the land of Lórien, and dwelt there alone
under the fading trees until winter came. Galadriel had passed away and
Celeborn also was gone, and the land was silent.
"There at last when the mallorn-leaves were falling, but spring had not yet
come, she laid herself to rest upon Cerin Amroth; and there is her green grave,
until the world is changed, and all the days of her life are utterly forgotten
by men that come after, and elanor and niphredil bloom no more east of the Sea.
"Here ends this tale, as it has come to us from the South; and with the passing
of Evenstar no more is said in this book of the days of old."
"1541 In this year on March 1st came at last the Passing of King Elessar.
It is said that the beds of Meriadoc and Peregrin were set beside the bed of
the great king. Then Legolas built a grey ship in Ithilien, and sailed
down Anduin and so over Sea; and with him, it is said, went Gimli the
Dwarf. And when that ship passed an end was come in Middle-earth of the
Fellowship of the
Ring."

I'm not bad. I just post that way.
