The encyclopedia is out! Congratulations to my fellow contributors –
Anchises’ Ghost, Arquen, dna, drogo drogo, Entwife Wandlimb, Inferno, Modtheow,
NZ Strider, Penthe, squire, and weaver – on a job well done. And thanks
to the encyclopedia’s editor, Michael Drout, for trusting us with these
assignments. In case you missed it, Drout posted some warm words about
our involvement in May here
on his blog. And this week, he posted a fascinating behind-the-scenes
look at his own involvement with the project, which you can read here
I would also like to express my gratitude to Altaira, Atlas, hatster, and
notlost, who each offered some assistance along the way, and especially to Elf
Maven, who got the whole ball rolling about two years ago, when she wrote to
Michael Drout to offer her services as an editor.

It’s a big book, measuring 8 ¾” wide by 11 ¼” tall: higher and broader
than a desktop (abridged) dictionary, but not as thick. It weighs in at 4
lbs. 7 oz. There are 808 pages (34 Roman and 774 Arabic). The
preliminaries include a list of contributors, alphabetical list of entries,
thematic list of entries, introduction by the editor, Michael Drout, and list
of standard abbreviations. There are 720 pages of entries. There is
a 54-page index.
The final list of entries varies slightly from what previously appeared on the
encyclopedia’s website. There are 537 entries by 127 authors. The
articles vary in size approximately from 150 words to 10,000 words. Most
entries include a “See Also” list and a bibliography.
I won’t be reviewing the encyclopedia, of course, but I append some statistics
below and in a response to this post. And now I welcome your questions
and comments.
Number of Articles per Author
Thirty-three authors contributed only one entry, but here is the other end of
the spectrum, the thirteen writers who wrote ten or more entries:

Article Size
I count 20 articles of more than 2,500 words, based on a very rough estimate,
determined by counting the words in one sample column and multiplying that
figure by the number of columns (or parts of columns) in the main text of each
entry. Some large articles have more subdivision than others – i.e.
section breaks, meaning fewer words – so there are some errors in my
calculations. For example, Dale Nelson wrote here
that his article was 10,000 words long. Nevertheless:

There are a total of 2,538 works listed in the entry bibliographies,
representing 1,374 separate titles. Note that this does not include most
citations of Tolkien’s best-known works: these do not appear in each
entry’s bibliography but are listed in a general bibliography (the
aforementioned abbreviations list) that follows the encyclopedia’s
introduction. (These works are: The Hobbit, The Lord of
the Rings, The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, all twelve
volumes in The History of Middle-earth series, The Adventures of Tom
Bombadil, Beowulf and the Critics, The Letters of J.R.R.
Tolkien, The Monsters and the Critics and Other Essays, Poems and
Stories and Tree and Leaf.) Even so, Tolkien is the most-cited
author in the entry bibliographies, with 259 listings. The 30
most-referenced authors after Tolkien appear below, showing the total number of
citations, followed by the number of works cited. For authors sometimes
working in tandem, I credited both: thus Wayne Hammond and Douglas
Anderson for J.R.R. Tolkien: A Descriptive Bibliography. I will
