Subject:
Bamfurlong?
Message:

On the subject of changes to the text, can anyone with a recent printing of the LotR tell me whether "Bamfurlong" appears as the name of Maggot's farm in "A Shortcut to Mushrooms?"

As I mentioned below, yesterday I came across an online attempt to annotate the LotR, and scanning through a couple of the chapters thus completed, I read that Pippin's line, after recognizing the turnip fields the hobbits are crossing in the Marish, is "We are on old Farmer Maggot's land" in the First Edition, but "This is Bamfurlong; old Farmer Maggot's land" in the Second Edition.  Meanwhile, the First Edition of the RotK contains a reference to runners arriving from Bamfurlong in "The Scouring of the Shire," but this is changed to Whifurrows in the Second Edition.

So I looked at my copy of the LotR, a paperback version of the Second Edition dating to 1981, and discovered that it still has Pippin's First Edition, non-Bamfurlong sentence in "Three Is Company," and the Index gives the only occurence of the name as appearing in "The Scouring of the Shire," where, however, it has been replaced with Whitfurrows.
