...it's Tolkien's subtle way of expressing how Sam too begins to get caught up
with the Ring. We are given a description of how Smeagol & Deagol fight over
the Ring, and it seems that the violence is amplified by the Ring, i.e. Smeagol
probably wouldn't have murdered Deagol over something else.
One way to interpret it could be to say that the Ring was playing Sam & Gollum
against one another. Without either one in the picture the Ring would have had
an easier time making its way back to Sauron since Frodo was becoming weaker
under its influence.
But, all in all, Sam's suspicions were correct. Or were they? Did he help in
some way, by means of his constant ridicule, to weaken Smeagol's resolve.
Smeagol seemed to be back to stay, and was honestly fighting with himself over
right & wrong. Maybe under the influence of the Ring Sam wore Smeagol down much
in the way Sauron did to Denethor.
