their story being the other major (successful) romance in the Sil (let's
gloss over Aredhel and Eöl, shall we ;)).
For other examples of romantic-style high fantasy, they can be found everywhere
in the Sil and elsewhere. Ilúvitar creates the Ainur and bids them to make a
world (more biblical than romantic, but still a romance-renaisance style). The
whole story of Beren and Lúthien (including before they meet - Beren's journey
through Nan Dungortheb is romantic). Fingon's rescue of Maedhros. Húrin cries
out seventy times while slaying trolls before being overwhelmed. Isildur's
recovery of the fruit from the White Tree. Boromir's last stand. Eomer
dismounting to fight and slay Ugluk. Aragorn's standing on the wall in front of
the besiegers at Helm's Deep. Eowyn's desperate showdown with the Witch-King.
The rescue of Frodo and Sam from Orodruin. That the final casualties of the War
of the Ring - Saruman and Grima - should happen right on the front doorstep of
Bag End.
Tolkien was a romantic.

btw Elwing can swim. She probably expected that Maedhros and Maglor would shoot
her even as she swam (and they very well could have, had Ulmo not
acted).
