The U.S. was there a short time
Message:

compared to the countries of the U.K.  I'm not surprised that Canada, New Zealand, and Australia would keep the memory alive, although even in those countries it seems that what started as a memorial to THE Great War has become a memorial to WWI and II at least, and perhaps others as well.

Here are some statistics that might explain why few U.S. citizens care about WWI memorials:

World War I (1917–1918)
Total servicemembers 4,734,991
Battle deaths 53,402
Other deaths in service (nontheater) 63,114
Nonmortal woundings 204,002
Living veterans fewer than 500

World War II (1940–1945)
Total servicemembers 16,112,566
Battle deaths 291,557
Other deaths in service (nontheater) 113,842
Nonmortal woundings 671,846
Living veterans 4,762,0001

“I dislike Allegory - the conscious and intentional allegory - yet any attempt to explain the purport of myth or fairytale must use allegorical language.  (And, of course, the more 'life' a story has the more readily will it be susceptible of allegorical interpretations: while the better a deliberate allegory is made the more nearly will it be acceptable just as a story.)” (From Tolkien Letter # 131.)
