Penthe, I'm not sure if you said quite what you intended with "Australia is
renowned ... while losing (proportionally) less men even than New
Zealand." New Zealand has the sad claim to "fame" of having lost more men per
capita than almost all the nations it's fought alongside in all wars since the
South African War of 1899-1902 (four times Australia's in WWII, for example).
Sadly, it's not hard to have done better than us regarding casualties.
Many Kiwi soldiers returning from WWI and (to a slightly lesser extent) WWII
spoke of the lack of comprehension or even interest in their experiences in
those unimaginably distant
places.
