Melbourne's Shrine of Remembrance
Message:

This is what I grew up with as a memorial in our city.

The pictures don't give it justice. A major road was routed around the hill it stands on, so that the Shrine can be seen from the whole length of the main shopping street in the city centre. Australia is renowned (notorious) for having more memorials than any other allied country per capita, while losing (proportionally) less men even than New Zealand. Who could be said to be in a similar political and geographical situation.

The Hobbits did want to create a memorial to the Hobbits that fell in their war, but they failed to understand that it was merely a battle, rather than the whole conflict. By comparison, the memorial to the hapless for Turin, Nienor, Morwen and Hurin ackowledges precisely their role as victims, but victims who kept fighting anyway. Which is much more like these modern war memorials. They honour those who died for victory, and those who died in vain equally. In my opinion.
