could someone else have done as well? I think that's where the tension
lies -- Frodo was chosen to bear the Ring, but could someone else have been
chosen with the same results? I'd say certainly for the point is not that
measure of success lies in Providence and not the "man."
Really, I think your reference to the Old Testament heroes of the faith is
fair. Take Moses, for instance, who was a murderer, a stutterer, and he
even blows it once in the desert. A Hebrew reared in Pharoah's palace,
could anyone else have represented his people better? Though he doesn't
get to enjoy the Promised Land, he is generally regarded as a man of great
faith and high morals. Does he get the credit? Sort of. One
gets the idea he was uniquely qualified because of God's intervention.
Sure, he had to cooperate to some extent, but one gets the feeling that God
could have picked someone else.
