Overall I agree with Mr. Garth's points as you summarized them (& as I remember from reading his book.). Reading LOTR with the WWI info in the background greatly informed and enhanced my reading of the books. I don't have time now to detail all the ways, as I am sneaking this in at work. As for the specific topic in this post, yes, I see Frodo as a very modern sort of hero. One who came through the trenches shell shocked but a hero nonetheless. How I wish I could have gone to the conference; thanks again for these reports.
