What of his love of myth |
Message: |
or Fairie then? What of his desire to write a myth for England?
What of his claim that he primarily wrote to entertain? What of his
confession that he simply enjoyed the game of creating a fantasy world?
What of his experience in World War I? What of his love of history, "real
or feigned"? Tolkien had many passions in his life. I hesitate to
call any one of them the "ruling" passion, and apparently you do to.
Perhaps we

“I dislike Allegory - the conscious and intentional allegory - yet any attempt to explain the purport of myth or fairytale must use allegorical language. (And, of course, the more 'life' a story has the more readily will it be susceptible of allegorical interpretations: while the better a deliberate allegory is made the more nearly will it be acceptable just as a story.)” (From Tolkien Letter # 131.)
