The story of Beren and Lúthien is the story of the ultimate perfect heroes.
They experience a perfect love for each-other, and then, in the name of that
love, these people, just people face down the greatest of the Gods, the
God of Evil - and win! Lastly, they leave behind an enduring legacy that,
together with their own exploits, results in the salvation of the world from
the jaws of absolute disaster!
There are several things that come up in this story that warrant some serious
discussion, including:
1) What powers the Silmarils have. We aren't told of any, but the story - and
the exploits of B&L - are all the more glorious if they do.
2) Why do the Valar decide to send them 'beyond the world'. This calls into
question the motivations of the Valar, and by extension Ilúvitar, and might
unfortunately make the story much less appealing depending on how we envision
it.
