What makes a canoe, a canoe? Did Tolkien want us to think "canoe" without using
the word (which came to the English language through the French)? Would it be
appropraite to use the term "canoe" to communicate the concept even though he
did not use the word?
I know this is the Reading Room, but I thought the film showed an effective
compromise between what I would call a canoe and some other type of boat. Is
there a specific name for the style of boat designed for the
films?
