In Reply To: Tolkien the Catholic: to the blessing or detriment?  <Beren IV>  [9/30/2004 @ 22:37]  (9/24)
Subject:
Being Catholic myself
Message:

...I picked up straight away on several (sometimes small) details that were clearly in line with Catholicism. It didn't hardly affect how I perceived anything written by Tolkien. The Catholicism in his work shaped the story and his works wouldn't be the same without his faith coming through. I doubt Tolkien intended for his work to be read and understood by Catholics alone. As for non-Catholics leaving his work alone, his stories are such that one cannot read these books and remain unchanged, no matter about religion. I think that's what counts.
