...I picked up straight away on several (sometimes small) details that were
clearly in line with Catholicism. It didn't hardly affect how I perceived
anything written by Tolkien. The Catholicism in his work shaped the story and
his works wouldn't be the same without his faith coming through. I doubt
Tolkien intended for his work to be read and understood by Catholics alone. As
for non-Catholics leaving his work alone, his stories are such that one cannot
read these books and remain unchanged, no matter about religion. I think that's
what
counts.
