that Tolkien was a devout Catholic, or Catholic at all, until a few years ago.  Even knowing now, I don't pick up on it, except those themes that are pointed out to me.  I've read that Tolkien did not particularly want Catholic doctrine to come out in his writing, and he deliberately refrained from having "religion" as such in LOTR at all.  Now, I admit that I am often oblivious to themes and just enjoy a good story, and I assume that other people do too, regardless of whether they are Christian or not.  I am interested to hear others' opinions/reactions to this question.
