the "word-hoard" with the broader concepts of possession etc.!

I literally was just reading Paul Kocher on possessiveness in LOTR and noting how well his thesis fits in with this portion of the Sil, which was not available to him (the book is a 1972 publication). Kocher focuses on the attitude to possession within LOTR -- the concept that by possessing (rather than simply having) one becomes oneself possessed.

Kocher, however, is discussing this entirely in the context of the nature of evil. It would be quite interesting to test how well this general pattern fits to other kinds of ownership, both in LOTR and elsewhere. (Someone else can do this for now, though -- I'm only just catching up before the week drops off the boards!)
