that the unconscious drives behavior. So Tolkien's conscious
intent may not manifest itself in his writing, because his unconscious is
leading the way. And he wouldn't even know it.
So while it's prudent to look first to conscious intent, I think it's necessary
to be aware that the final product will have elements that the author didn't
intend.
