I think this phrase is significant because it foreshadows the eventual ability
of the Valar, the Eldar and Men to finally defeat Morgoth only after he had
poured so much of his power into destroying things.
In fact, that's how I interpreted the phrase in this passage; that he had
poured his power into general evilness, not into Ungoliant. I thought she had
grown in power from destroying and feasting on the light of the two trees, not
from begging, borrowing or stealing any power from
him.
