Aragorn served in Gondor in disguise. Denethor, at least, guessed who he
was, and Denethor's father may well have known Aragorn's true identity.
But yes, originally northern and southern rangers were part of the same
kingdom, and even after the kingdoms split for a long time there were
communications, trade, and even a royal marriage (Aragorn's ancestor Arvedui
married a princess of Gondor, and that is additional support for Aragorn's
claim to the throne of
Gondor).
