oaths should be avoided because mortals can't control their destinies and
distinguish oath-taking from all other mortal activities. One could argue
that because we can't predict our own future and control the situations around
us, we shouldn't have children.
Why are only oaths to be avoided? What other human activities should be avoided
for the reasons you list?
In your last statement, you seem to conclude that because oath-breaking leads
to punishment, they should be avoided. I think the unspoken middle step
here is your premise that oath-breaking is unavoidable, and consequently the
punishment is inevitable. I'm not sure I agree with that, and I'm really
not sure that's what Tolkien
intended.
