I think something like the Arkenstone, found in the heart of 'their' mountain
and lovingly handcrafted into a thing of surpassing beauty, could easily be as
important to the Dwarves as the Silmarils were to Feanor and his sons.
And, as Dwarves go, the time and care spent handcrafting the Nauglamir
parallels the time and care spent handcrafting the Arkenstone, and we know what
happened as a result of them wanting the Nauglamir back!
It makes me think part of their motivation was also pride: no one could surpass
their workmanship and make such a thing of beauty, so no one else deserved to
share in
it.
