you bring to mind another question... Merry and Pippin leave for Rohan they plan not to return, don't they pass on their titles and such before they go?  In effect they are as dead to the Shire as Frodo when he sails, or Bilbo when he leaves to wander after his birthday party.

we also have heroic customs for burial, just visit Arlington Cememtary in the US, and I do feel its appropraite for Merry and Pippin... as you say symbolic death... i just wonder if there could be other meanings behind it.
