But Pippin had a copy in the great Thain's Library that he built, which he took
with him to Minas Tirith. There it was the subject of scholarship and
commentary (and correction of the non-hobbit details) and then presented back
to Thain Faramir (or a descendant) some time later. It's this copy, the Thain's
Book, that has survived through the ages of the world to be translated by
Tolkien. (totally into the conceit here).
So there's the ultimate effect of Merry and Pippin's departure for Gondor: the
survival of the story into our own
time.
