and a stark contrast to not only the other members of the fellowship but to
most of the "good guys" in the story. The only other person who seems to abhor
fighting as much as he does is Faramir, though he does do so out of necessity.
It is unfortunate that the movies do not show some of Frodo's greatest moments
when he eschues violence, ie when he casts away his sword in Mordor and when he
shows mercy to Saruman. I agree with Erather that Frodo's moral success is
largely due to this trait of his, but surely the quest would have failed
without the fighting skills of his companions. Much honor and strength of
character is accorded other characters in the book, such as Aragorn, who are
great fighters. How des Tolkien reconcile these two different
ideals?
