The entire idea of the Elves fighting against Morgoth is that it is a hopeless
cause. The Free Peoples can bond against Sauron, but not the more powerful
Morgoth. He is simply too evil and too strong.
This situation is what brings out the hope in Elves and Men, that something
will save them. The Noldor yearned for the help of the West and that of Men and
Dwarves. Militarily the Union of Meadhros might have won , but Morgoth
would simply shut up shop and rebuild his armies from Thangodorim. And the
Union's armies would be leaving their homes undefended- outside of Doriath,
nothing is safe. Perfect prey for winged Dragons, Orc spies and evil Men.
The Elves might have won the battle, but come no closer to defeating Morgoth
ultimately. Only Earendil's journey and self sacrifice (he forsakes true
escape, the gift of Men) brings out the Maiar and the Valinorean Elves, the only
forces that can stop
Morgoth.
There is but one task remaining in Arda-we,the Dragons of Valinor will make it happen.
