seem to have been extremely voluminous. I have read several volumes of
the History of Middle Earth (covering the LotR material), and found them
extremely interesting. Mostly these volumes consist of early drafts, with
Christopher's notes. It's quite clear what is original material and what
isn't, and I found it fascinating to see how the work evolved.
Christopher's editorial hand is a lot stronger in the Silmarillion and some of
the other works, although in Unfinished Tales there are also a lot of his notes
as to the state of the drafts he was working with.
I haven't read it all, by a long shot, but what I have read was
fascinating.
