They could also back track to Osgiliath and ask Hurin for help ,and that the King has ordered them to retake the Isle from the west-saving their faces and emboldening their deed.

The men sent there will most likely meet the Orc-boats- or, why not go to Osgiliath and use the boats abandoned in the initial march through (before it fell?).

If all else fails, they can shoot arrows across-whomever is occupying Cair Andros is practically under siege. Orcs can shoot across the northern part of the Anduin, as told in 'The Great River'. So why can't men?

There is but one task remaining in Arda-we,the Dragons of Valinor will make it happen.
