Riddles in the Dark #III.  The Shining Sword
Message:

But in slapping all his pockets and feeling all round himself for matches his hand came on the hilt of his little sword - the little dagger that he got from the trolls, and that he had quite forgotten; nor fortunately had the goblins noticed it, as he wore it inside his breeches.

Now he drew it out.  It shone pale and dim before his eyes.  “So it is an elvish blade, too,” he thought; “and goblins are not very , and yet not far enough.”

1.  How do you think the elves caused some swords to glow?

2.  We had some discussion about this last week, but I don't know if we came to any resolution.  In all of Tolkien’s work, only Glamdring, Orcrist and Sting are known to signal the presence of orcs or goblins.  Or are there any others?  Why do some elven blades work this way and others do not?  Did Narsil glow?

He stood still enchanted, while the sweet syllables of the elvish song fell like clear jewels of blended word and melody.
