You could have sequels that would be more character development and personal in
nature which would not diminish the mythology. Some ideas:
Aragorn's son..I forget his name..is a young man and is sent by Aragorn to
negotiate a treaty with the men of harad or rhun. He goes off with his
friends, a dwarf from Dain and a hobbit ambassador from the shire and finds the
entire kingdom in chaos and civil war. In the midst is an evil blue
wizard grown powerful and causing strife among the kingdoms in order to try to
take it all over...with an army of zombie-like undead he has managed to raise
through evil sorcery. The young prince befriends and joins forces with a
prince of Rhun or Harad..and a renegade dragon who has settled in the area to
stop the evil blue wizard before it is too late! In the end, they succed
and there is finally peace between Gondor and the kingdom or Rhun or
Harad..this would be a good opportunity to not only humanize these peoples but
also explore what must be fascinating backgrounds into these kingdoms.
You could even make references to the sphinx and pyramids..adding to Tokien's
conceit that these events actually
happened.
