The Tengwar of Feanor is another example of his artistic skill, and perhaps
even of his hubris. Developing an independent system of writing is just
par for the course when dealing with a Noldo who fashions the Silmarils and
cultivates his own cult of personality.
The usual order of script versus carved letters is reversed in the case of the
Elves because they are not as inclined to work with stone. They also
don't rely on stone monuments as much as the the Dwarves, who find the cirth
more suitable to their
skills.
But to Sam the evening deepened to darkness as he stood at the Haven;
and as he looked at the grey sea he saw only a shadow on the waters that
was soon lost in the West. There still he stood far into the night, hearing
only the sigh and murmur of the waves on the shores of Middle-earth, and
the sound of them sank deep into his heart. Beside him stood Merry and
Pippin, and they were silent.
