1. Gandalf and Chance: Does chance follow Gandalf around, or does Gandalf
follow chance?
I like to think of Gandalf's luck with "chance" as a confirmation that The
Powers That Be (NOT the founders of this website, though they also deserve
divine blessing : ) are pleased with his labors.
2. Is it chance? What other forces might be at work? Who might be doing what?

That's not for mere mortals to answer, I think! (Hmm, I seem to be in a rather
