Quote Gandalf: "He will be maimed for ever, becoming a mere spirit of malice
that gnaws itself in the shadows, but cannot again grow or take shape."
The image of this once mighty being who wanted to be as a god reduced to a
state where it can do nothing but torment itself is the most chilling line in
the book, in my opinion. I think it's also the closest JRRT comes in the pages
of LOTR to describing an eternal punishment for an evil character, although
it's presented as a natural consequence of his actions rather than a divinely
imposed
sentence.
