Frodo and Sam chuck their shields and helmets, and Frodo gets rid of his orc
cloak and sword. But it doesn't say that he gets rid of the dirty leather
shirt and hairy trousers, nor is there any suggestion that he is naked after
that. Sam had never given up his regular travelling clothes, just added
the orc-cloak over them (with helmet and shield). But by the time they
reached Mt. Doom his duds probably looked pretty orcish...
So that's what they were wearing at the Field of Cormallen, though
it's quite likely that the worst of the orc-ick was rinsed out of them before
showtime. (Amazing what a little athelas steam will do!)
Some folks maintain that Frodo's old hobbit clothes had been
recovered by Gandalf from the Mouth of Sauron, but if you check the wording
there, it simply says that the Mouth showed them the mithril mailshirt which
Frodo had worn under his clothing, not that the clothing was still wrapped
around the shirt when the Mouth had it. So Frodo would have to pick
through the rubble of Barad-dur to get his old breeches and weskit
back!
