I just read and pondered all the responses on Sam's keeping just the gift of
the Elves in his pack. Soooo
How about that being a key link here? Sam is showing that despite having
discarded the human stuff, he still believes that the Elvish gifts may have
value (or he would have tossed them too). Perhaps their value is as
a psychic link to Galadriel--particularly the star-glass. Maybe the
reason she or Gandalf can reach them here is just because they keep to
the last their link to the
elves.
