FantasyFan said it before I could, though. I think this is another example of that moment on Amon Hen when Gandalf tells Frodo to take off the ring. They do have a connection, no matter how fuzzy the transmission into Mordor might be, and even if Gandalf can't see what's happening, his message might get through, although perhaps the "caffeine boost" that gets the message through the interference comes from the Valar and the caffeine boost for Frodo and Sam comes from Gandalf.

As for the artsy-fartsy-ness, I get more the feeling that Sam's beginning to lose it, and the strange juxtaposition of images is just his inability to focus and his retreat into the past.
