Aragorn's own demands |

I would just like to add a thought that maybe Aragorn himself does not see that
he is worthy for a king before he has lead (not only dunedain from the North
and armies of the dead but also) armies of Gondor, Rohan etc. in the last
battle in front of the Black Gate. That will also set him the highest-ranking
person among all the warlords around. He knows his heritage and is aware that
it justifies his claim for the throne. He may still want to show his personal
capacity as a leader beyond any doubt. After all, as we have seen, he wants to
be renowned for his own actions.
Of course, as many have already noted, it wouldn't make much sense in claiming
the throne (possibly raising dissident voices) only to lose the kingdom for
Sauron.
