I've always argued that Frodo is more of a Christ figure in the story (notice I didn't say he was an allegory-- calm down).
Frodo's bearing the ring (man's evils), his 'death' and resurrection by sailing to
the Undying Lands is much like Christ's dying for the sins of others. Then there
is the parallel to lumbas and the body of Christ-- Faramir and the last supper
stuff. (Just slap me)
But I'm not versed in the New Testament having a mixed up religious childhood.
All I know of Catholicism is what I've read and learned from my husband who grew
up Catholic. Curious is of the opinion that Frodo is more Saint like than Christ
like. So now that I've totally alienated myself with supposed allegorical
references, fire away.

To
Reverend:
Alas,
we cry for us today--
A
dearest friend has gone away.
As
we recall his words we read
And
weep for words not to be said--
Remember
what our eyes enclose:
The
lasting imprints of his prose.
The
purest tribute our heart rends
Is
written within minds of friends.
