The first choice available was to take the Old Forest Road directly east of
Rivendell, but that would have taken the Fellowship right passed Dol Guldur,
which was known to be full of Sauron's fell creatures and had been his base
just before renovations at Barad-dur were complete. The second choice was to
nip down through Eregion of Dunland and through the Gap of Rohan, but news of
Saruman's betrayal ruled that out as it would have taken the Fellowship through
the land of the Dunlendings (Saruman's allies) and right passed Isengard. that
left the third choice, to take the Redhorn route over the shoulder of Caradhas.
The fourth route, that was not considered in Rivendell, was the one eventually
taken due to dire circumstance through
Moria.
