It's like Elves, Wizards, Dwarves, etc. Staying inside the notion that Tolkien
translated the story from the Red Book, we can say that he only used the words
'wizard' or elf' or indeed 'vampire' because they were the closest fit to the
words in the Red Book that he was translating to English, not because he wanted
people to view Elves as the typical foot-high fairies who work for Santa. I
imagine a vampire in Tolkien is more like a large bat (to todays bats what
oliphaunts are to today's elephants, for
example).
