if I entirely agree on your point about the Rohirrim saving the day for Gandalf.  Did the Witch King, when he spoke his threat to Gandalf (I can't remember the exact words)know of Gandalf's new state of power?  Could Gandalf have contended with the Witch-King?  After all, he "strove with the Dark Tower" successfully to keep Frodo and Sam safe for awhile.  I find it both brilliant and frustrating that Tolkien never really allowed us to completely understand the extent of Gandalf's power.

Monet- Venice Twilight

And the moon will rise and fall
And the light will touch the tide
Are we holding hands and never feeling
All around the world we swing
Like a penny in a spin
Always looking for the way
To get out, to get in
