I like what you said about free will. The thing that makes Aragorn so
impressive is that at any given moment he can say "Forget this, I'm going to go
retire to a nice place in the mountains with my girl." Of course, he
doesn't...he's the hero. The ability to make that choice and yet still choose
the more difficult, dangerous path is what shows his
nobility.
