The only problem with that is that Legolas tells Merry and Pippin about the
Paths of the Dead. Gimli, even after some nagging from his friends, refuses to
speak of it.
Maybe later, in Minas Tirith after Aragorn's crowning, Gimli opens up and tells
Frodo about it directly. But we'll never know for sure. Certainly, though, the
terror of the experience is most effectively rendered from the POV of the most
terrified
witness.
