Next time, Gimli will take the charter flight;)
The Rangers are quite scared too, but they had each other (and Aragorn) to
reinforce their will. Numenoreans all have a fear of death, even the Faithful
and it may have been inherited. So our perspective moves on to the least
fearful (Legolas) and then Gimli (the one scared the most).
The Sons of Elrond probably aren't afraid of the ghosts of Men, but are afraid
of the residual terror they bring-like when the villagers run and shut their
doors later. Note that Elladan is hindmost of the party, though. Legolas and his
people have had to contend with Dol Guldur and its gloom-fear of ghosts is
impossible for him.
Gimli has every right to be afraid. Men are strange even to Elves, what more to
the Dwarves, strangest of all. He is terrified because the Dead are like
Fangorn-something unnatural he doesn't understand, and Dwarves have always
stuck by rigid logic (they never move or explore because of this). Legolas has
heard of the Ents and tales of other supernatural things and thus is not afraid
at all of them.
That skeleton is Baldor the hapless, son of Brego. He's wearing princely
raiment, though I wonder why he died hewing the door and not running for the
exit. That's what happens when you get drunk at a family gathering...what's
behind that door, I wonder...the gift
shop?
There is but one task remaining in Arda-we,the Dragons of Valinor will make it happen.
