Yes, it's a very good question. It's possible that Tolkien forgot about them
:-) But more seriously (and I was just talking about this with Mr Kimi over
lunch), I think there was probably a spectrum of fear among the travellers,
from Gimli's "I hope I don't wet myself" through the odd Dunadan with too much
imagination; the odd Dunadan with very little imagination; superior Dunedain
like Halbarad; Aragorn, who has iron self-control and a trace of Elvish
heritage; the sons of Elrond, who have a lot of empathy with Aragorn and the
other Dunedain and therefore sense their fear (and catch an echo of it); right
through to Legolas, pure Elf and with no understanding of night fears and ghost
stories. Tolkien chooses to tell us about the two
extremes.
