So good to be back. I have been on vacation and was sad that I missed all
of last weeks discussion and most of this weeks - I love these chapters.
1)I don't know - but I am sure they are ancient. The symbols were carved
long before Baldor son of Brego tried to find out who it was. Maybe the
last remnants of the cursed people before they died and became the ghosts that
haunted the paths of the dead?
2)I also wondered about the sons of Elrond. My guess is that they were
worried FOR Aragorn since he was a man. They had hunted orcs with him for
many years and I like to think that they approved of Arwen's choice - even if
Aragorn wasn't the King of Gondor. So, their fear was for him - that he
wouldn't be accepted as Isildur's heir.
3) Gimli is the most like us human readers, so that is the perspective.
Besides, Legolas felt no fear, and Aragorn was sternly resolute - so we
couldn't have him being the narrative voice describing overwhelming terror.
4) I, too, have wished for more of this story of Baldor. Why did he make
that vow? What were the legends that he knew about that caused him to
make that vow. And why did he meet his death hewing at the door?
Why not just give up and go home? More glimpses of stories beyond
stories.
