Does anyone have the exact quote? It seems to me that JRRT is being
unduly harsh. When somebody apparently doesn't breathe for several
minutes, has no heartbeat, and doesn't react at the loss of the enchanted item
he's most attached to, it seems perfectly reasonable to conclude that he's
dead.
