Sam's bewilderment at the world's pig-headed insistence on continuing rings
true with too many people to be silly. Not having a store of great poetry to
share (to my great regret) I instead offer The End of the World, a 1963 pop hit
for Skeeter Davis (who lost her high school friend and original singing partner
when they were both in a violent car accident) and recorded by many other
artists since. The lyrics are probably familiar to everybody (or maybe just
everybody over a certain age) and appear all over the internet but I did not
run across the composer or lyricist anywhere.
Why does the sun go on shining
Why does the sea rush to shore
Don't they know it's the end of the world
Cause you don't love me anymore
Why do the birds go on singing
Why do the starts glow above
Don't they know it's the end of the world
It ended when I lost your love
I wake up in the morning and I wonder
Why everything is the same as it was
I can't understand, no, I can't understand
How life goes on the way it does
Why does my heart go on beating
Why do these eye of mine crying
Don't they know it's the end of the world
It ended when you said goodbye
Don't they know It's the end of the world
It ended when you said goodbye
Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside of a dog it's too dark to read.
