1. Yes, I have felt somewhat similarly at times of great loss. How can the
world go on without [too personal] in it?
2. Sam's view of the world has grown larger, and yet he never loses his focus.
Nor does he lose his awareness of his own smallness in that great world. He has
grown spiritually all along the journey; think back to what a huge leap it was
for him to accept Strider, a Big Person who apparently menaced his master.
Elves have become real as well as the stuff of legends to him.
3. He wants something to remember Frodo by; things that were precious to Frodo
and touched his flesh. They are also things of great practical and "magical"
value. Elvish indeed.
4. Talking aloud: he's putting off the heartrending silence that is to come,
when he goes on alone. And it's as if he keeps Frodo alive in his mind for a
few more precious
moments.
